Bay Hill’s population is cozy, at just under 6,000. As a census-designated place within the city of Orlando, Bay Hill is often thought of as part of larger suburban area that also includes the community of Dr. Phillips. Both Bay Hill and Dr. Phillips afford an elegant and scenic lifestyle. The high-end housing of Bay Hill is complemented by premier recreational opportunities, including golf, water sports and big name attractions.
Many of the recreational opportunities in the region are provided by local lakes. Bay Hill is central to Orlando’s Butler Chain of Lakes, also called the Windermere Chain. The chain consists of nine interconnected lakes covering more than 4,700 acres. These lakes are known for their high quality waters and excellent fishing. The waters are populated by bluegill, shell cracker, crappie and bullhead catfish. Boat access is available at county ramps at Lake Down and Lake Isleworth.
Public parks in the Bay Hill area are managed by the city of Orlando. Orlando’s Families, Parks & Recreation Department oversees many sports leagues, cultural activities and age-specific programs. Specifically, the city manages 17 recreation centers, 10 pools, 15 tennis courts, plus numerous athletic fields, youth and adult sports teams, a skate park and more. One of the noteworthy sites in the system is the Harry P. Leu Gardens, a 50-acre botanical site featuring several themed gardens and a restored 19th century home.
Tourist attractions have made the Orlando region a world-famous vacation destination. For locals, this provides the luxury of choice in dining, shopping and having fun. As Walt Disney World, Epcot Center and Universal Studios Florida draw in thousands, local restaurants and shops flourish as they serve these visitors’ daily needs. Bay Hill residents have the option of driving a few minutes to participate in the fast-paced side of Orlando, or simply relaxing in the peace and quiet of their lakeside neighborhood.
Bay Hill residents also enjoy the sunny weather that has contributed to Florida’s popularity as a winter retreat. Average temperatures in Bay Hill range from highs in the 90s to lows in the 50s. The warmest months are July, August and September, while the coolest are January and February. Annual rainfall is about 48 inches, with the wettest months being June and July.
